I recently listened to the story of World War I canine hero Sergeant Stubby ($9.99 Kindle), the true story of America’s most-decorated military dog. The book chronicles the history of a stray dog who trained with troops and traveled to Europe, loyal to the young man who befriended him.
The audiobook is included in the Audible Plus catalog for members if you would like to give it a listen. The female narrator doesn’t seem to be the best choice for this selection. It is a book about a man and his dog. A male narrator may have added more gravitas to the story.
The forward of the book “A Soldier’s Best Friend” is the story of veteran David A. Sharpe and a dog who rescued him for deep depression. You can read his story here and clicking on the LOOK INSIDE on the book cover. The short book preview includes Mr. Sharpe’s story in its entirety.
A short video version of Sgt. Stubby’s service can be found here. The movie is free with Amazon Prime and appears to be for children and families.
