Amber Drake, an avid reader of everything including cereal boxes, reviews for BSC Reviews and tries to keep track of her life and thoughts on her blog, http://www.dragonashes.com/ (Dragon Ashes). Trying to decide the top four favorite books out of 186 titles read this year was not easy. However, she finally whittled it down to these four:

Written by Zoe Archer, this is a historical romantic fantasy, the first of the Blades of the Rose series. It was fun, full of interesting characters and bits of nifty magic. This book tells the story of a girl who is eager to follow in the footsteps of her father in his important role as a Blade of the Rose – a secret society created to keep the magic of the world out of the hands of those who would use it to further their own agendas. One of the things I liked about this book was that while it was a romance, that romance wasn’t the only thing of interest in the tale. You can purchase Warrior for $4.39.
To get an even better price, The Blades of the Rose Bundle including Warrior, Scoundrel, Rebel, & Stranger is available for only $9.99.

The Spirit Lens by Carol Berg: another new series and this one is pure fantasy. Berg has a knack for creating interesting worlds with realistic characters and twisty plots. It is hard to categorize as it is sort of a mystery, but much more than that. While some portions of the setup seem a little improbable, it never matters much because the characters and plot just carry you along for the ride. You can purchase this book for $9.99.

The Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert Redick: I stayed away from this one for a long time, despite the accolades I’d seen. Mostly the title and the cover gave me the wrong impression of a naval battle story. When I finally gave it a try, I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, the story takes place on a gigantic sea vessel, but it is so much more than that. The main characters are young, the bad guys are not your basic ‘pure evil’ and they come across as realistic. The ship and its denizens are fascinating and full of character. For $6.15, you can purchase this action-packed adventure.

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis: Why did it take me so long to pick this one up? After reading it, I was annoyed with myself for waiting so long. It is a charming story full of British wit and time travel silliness. The story was extremely engaging and fun to read. Today, this book is available for $6.15.
