Light Housekeeping: Marketplace and Internet Fairness Act and Cheap Reads 0 comments

broom.panMarketplace and Internet Fairness Act
Many of you live in a state where Amazon has a physical presence (known as a nexus) and state sales taxes are collected on your purchases. Customers who live in other states may have their purchases taxed in the near future if the Marketplace and Internet Fairness Act is approved.
Earlier this week six Senators introduced legislation that combines the Marketplace Fairness Act and the Internet Tax Freedom Act into a single bill: the Marketplace and Internet Fairness Act. Bipartisan support for the two bills in both houses of Congress could mean that the combined bill will be approved this year. “Amazon.com has long supported a simplified nationwide approach that is evenhandedly applied and applicable to all but the smallest volume sellers,” Amazon VP Paul Misener wrote in a letter supporting the Marketplace Fairness bill. The bill would allow states to require online and other out-of-state retailers to collect sales and use tax.
