“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”
So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life!
Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry?
Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you’d actually want to read. Buy this mashup of the classic novel for $2.99 today as it is the B&N price match.
Voyage has arrived
UPS delivered my Voyage on Tuesday, a full month ahead of the original date. I eagerly opened the box, turned it on, chose my language preference, connected the wi-fi and registered the device. Oops! The registration errored. Probably just a typo. I entered the information again. Internal error? Must be so excited I’m fat-fingering something. Tried again. Internal error again?
Two more tries and I’m convinced there is a problem I cannot fix. The first helpful care rep at Amazon realized that she couldn’t register the device and sent me on to Kindle technical support. Richard patiently worked with me to gather all the information necessary for him to register the device. Hallelujah! A bit of trouble that worked out fine.
My first impressions: Amazing clarity! The type is so crisp and easier on the eyes. The size and weight is right. The feel is comfortable.
The negatives: The power button is a push-style on the back in the upper right. My Voyage has gone to sleep twice when I have inadvertently pushed the button while gripping the device. (I don’t use a cover.) I’m disappointed with the push-button to page advance. It takes a rather strong touch to turn the page. Maybe my device is built backwards – the sensitive button has been put on the back in error.
Update: Chris commented that the settings for the page-turning buttons can be adjusted. That negative is now a positive. . .
Another negative: When I started the Voyage later in that first evening, the device was no longer registered. I was able to complete the process on the device, but it was an aggravation. Hope I have time to learn more about the Voyage this weekend.
Ben Bradlee, Long-Time Washington Post Executive Editor, Dies
Ben Bradlee, the executive editor of The Washington Post from 1968 – 1991, passed away October 21 at the age of 93.
Bradlee became widely known during the presidency of Richard Nixon, when he challenged the federal government over the right to publish the Pentagon Papers and oversaw the publication of Bob Woodward’s and Carl Bernstein’s stories documenting the Watergate scandal.
As a reporter in the 1950s, Bradlee became close friends with then-senator John F. Kennedy, who had graduated from Harvard two years before Bradlee, and lived nearby. Bradlee’s wife at the time, Jean Saltonstall, was related to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
In 1960 Bradlee toured with both Kennedy and Richard Nixon in their presidential campaigns. He later wrote a book, Conversations with Kennedy ($1.99), recounting their relationship during those years. From parties at the White House to weekends at Palm Beach to JFK’s enduring influence on Bradlee’s own life, this is an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the man behind a myth, written by a giant of American journalism.
The Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO.

Vampire Hunter D Volume 1 ($1.99) 12,090 A.D. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility.
The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, the countryside is fragmented into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires-and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.
Every village wants a Hunter-one of the warriors who have pledged their laser guns and their swords to the eradication of the Nobility. But some Hunters are better than others, and some bring their own kind of danger with them…
Vampire Hunter D Volume 2 ($1.99) Vampires: murderous creatures in the shape of humans, they stalk the night feeding on the blood of innocents. Seemingly immortal, they can be destroyed only by the use of a stake through the heart, severing of their heads, or exposure to sunlight. By the year 12, 090 A.D. vampires have ruled the Earth for almost 300 years, and it is only these weaknesses that have kept these foul monsters from totally overrunning the world.
But what happens when those rules no longer apply? The village of Tsepesh sits in the eternal shadow of an abandoned castle, a onetime stronghold of the Nobility, the vampire lords who rule the devastated wasteland of the future. Ten years ago four children disappeared while playing near the castle, only to mysteriously reappear a month later. Now vampires have begun to hunt in the daylight. Are the two events connected? The villagers turn to the vampire hunter known only as D, but as he follows the children, now adults, the answers he finds may be more terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.
Last Friday night, the world changed–and not for the better.
Zombies are among us. School’s out for the foreseeable future, and with Mom and Dad at the lake house, my twin and I are on our own in this mess. Which is fine as long as we can avoid being on the menu.
Tripp Light’s teenage world is suddenly filled with “poxers”–the infected ones, the ones that have the Necropoxy virus. In an entire world gone mad and bad, Tripp’s only hope of survival is to clear a path through zombie land with his sister and head for the hills (aka his aunt’s farm) to rendezvous with his parents.
Success clearly favors the fittest and the fastest. Survival demands the twins make hard, ruthless decisions, but that all changes when Tripp and his twin hear a distress call via the radio. Prianka Patel, a girl Tripp loves to hate, is trapped and surrounded in a bakery. Soon, the twins have quite a collection of misfits and survivors and miles to go before anyone can sleep safely again.
No matter where Tripp looks, everyone everywhere is dead. Like really dead . . . a lot.
