An honest review of inspirational romance Hope’s Highest Mountain 8 comments

Hope’s Highest Mountain, Less the Hope
I love inspirational fiction. I listen to around 100 audiobooks and read 30 or so titles most years. I’ve enjoyed great novels and stayed with not-that-great novels.
Hope’s Highest Mountain ($1.59 Kindle version) was a torturous listen. When it finally ended, I emailed my sister this synopsis of the book.
Warning: Spoilers and no hope ahead.
• Hero in story lost his wife and daughter to small pox and is living as a recluse in the mountains of Montana.
• Heroine in story, her father (a doctor) and a loving maid leave their fancy home in Boston to deliver small pox vaccines to a remote fort in Montana.
• A driver/guide takes heroine, doctor, maid into the snowy mountains where the wagon slides backward and crashes.
• Doctor, maid and driver/guide perish.
• Heroine breaks thigh bone.
• Heroine is found by hero, a trained doctor.
• Heroine insists they deliver vaccines.
• After days of hero pulling broken-thigh heroine over the mountains, they come upon the cabin home of couple with grade-school age son.
• Man has an infection with high fever and soon dies.
• Hero, heroine, woman and boy continue toward village.
• Boy breaks arm playing on rocks.
• Woman who lost husband develops chicken pox.
• Hero leaves heroine, woman and boy to fend for themselves as he goes to village.
• Hero becomes disoriented in blizzard – nearly freezes before found by village men.
• Hero and village men return to rescue women, boy.
• While hero is away, boy falls down ravine and heroine falls in trying to rescue him.
Other than all this, the book was uplifting.

Weddings and Fantasy deals 0 comments
Happy Friday, All –
So excited as our niece is getting married today. Everyone loves a wedding with the radiant bride beaming, beautiful young ladies in high heels and dressy dresses; handsome young men standing stiffly beside the nervous groom; parents aflutter with mixed emotions and giggly guests. Pomp and tradition and free-flowing happiness abounds.
Best wishes for many years of love and happiness, Holly and Austin!

Disney book deal
If you love fantasy and a young adult protagonist, Disney has the first three books in the Pandava series on sale for only 99 cents each. The recommended age for the series is grades 3-6, however the books have 350-400 pages each so they have some heft.
The first book in the series, Aru Shah and the End of Time, was named one of the 100 best fantasy books of all time by Time Magazine.

Disney periodically reduces the price of their young adult books (suitable for readers in grades 3 through high school) to 99 cents. You can find them by typing “Disney Hyperion” in the Amazon search browser and then sorting from low to high. Sorry you have to wade through the free samplers, but you will get to the 99 cents books on the first page.
Click here to purchase the Pandava Series. The fourth book was released earlier this week and is selling for $10.99.

If you love fantasy, give the Pandava series a try. If you love wedding cake, hope you are attending a reception soon.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Free Comic Book Day – Who knew? 4 comments

Free Comic Book Day – Who knew?
Free Comic Book Day is May 1. Who knew? I am confident I’m just one of millions of clueless folks out there, blissfully ignorant. Then I stumbled upon a free book with FCBD 2017 in the title.
Still ignorant, I searched FCBD on the web which led to the Free Comic Book Day official website. If you are a fan, this site has plenty of info to entertain you.

I haven’t read comic books since middle school when the cool kids walked uptown to Condon’s Corner Drug for the latest Archie or Richie Rich comic book and a cherry cola. Archie may have been resurrected through the television show Riverdale, but the hometown soda fountain is long gone.

The links below are to free comic books. The first one is for books with FCBD in the title; the second link is for books with Free Comic Book Day in the title. The selection includes Disney, Star Wars, Dr. Who, many superheroes and a few that look downright frightful. I noticed that many can be read on Paperwhite, Voyage and Oasis readers as well as newer Kindle Fire tables.
With nearly 140 comic books to download, you should find something that interest you.

Happy Birthday, Tiger!
Today is my husband Tiger’s birthday. We are busy with a family wedding this weekend and will celebrate a few days late. He will probably be happiest if I make a batch of triple-chocolate brownies.

WOOT! has deals on chocolate
If you need a chocolate fix, head over to Woot.com to check out the chocolate deals. Lindt, Ghirardelli, Russell Stover and a few other brands are available. You can also snag a deal on Rainbow Light Gummy Vitamin C Slices on the link above. According to Woot, vitamin C slices are chocolate. Who knew?

Free at last; Great reads with commentary 12 comments

Hello, Springtime!
Yesterday I came to realization that I am no longer bound by the rules and am now free to do whatever I want on this site.

• No more of that FTC-required statement about earning a commission if you click on a link.
• No more following Amazon’s operating agreement and operating policies.
• No more getting up at 5:30. Every Single Morning. Tuesday I didn’t wake up until 5:33.

Going forward, I will free-wheel my posts. It’s time to let our hair down. Don’t you think we are buddies after getting together every day for more than a decade? Our relationship has lasted longer than 33% of first marriages (scroll down on this linked page to Interesting Divorce Facts).

I will sometimes post great reads at great prices sans the associate tag so Big A doesn’t go over the edge. Look for book reviews in the coming weeks. Opinion pieces, freebies, secrets I’ve never told and more. We are going to have fun!

First free-wheel topic: The phone call.
Our house phone rang yesterday afternoon. Ninety-six out of hundred calls on that phone are autodialed unwelcome annoyances. As soon as I answered, I knew this one was special. The man claimed he was representing Amazon. He said that I had placed an order for $349.99 and Amazon thought it might be in error. If I had placed the order, I should hang up and await delivery. I hung up and cannot wait to see what will arrive at my doorstep. Hahaha!

We all know the guy was a scammer. Part of me wishes I had stayed on to learn his hook. If he calls again, I’ll stick with him. I’ll let you know what I ordered when the delivery arrives. Wink. Wink.

Second free-wheel topic: Great reads at a great price plus commentary

The Joe Hill: Heart-Shaped Box, 20th Century Ghosts, Horns, and NOS4A2 ($3.99) If you want to be scared witless, then grab these four bone-chilling novels of psychological and supernatural suspense by Joe Hill, the author otherwise known as Stephen King’s son.
These novels have been given the sort of overwhelming critical acclaim that is rare for works of skin-crawling supernatural terror. Who are these people who give critical acclaim to skin-crawling supernatural terror? I do not want to be their friend.
These books are also described as deliciously scary. My idea of deliciously scary is a pan of triple-chocolate brownies** made on Thursday and gone by Saturday, you know, a 48-hour life span.

**Triple-chocolate brownies: Start with a box brownie mix for 9×13 size pan. Follow the package instructions EXCEPT replace the water with Hershey’s chocolate syrup. Add a package of chocolate chips to the batter. Bake as instructed, perhaps a few minutes less to keep the brownies chewy. These are deliciously scary and you owe no one an apology for how many you consume.

PS: I have no idea if Joe Hill likes brownies.

Day 2 – Tuesday – Moving forward 3 comments

Good day! It is Tuesday, one day after Amazon kicked us to the curb. I honestly do not know why because I’m doing exactly what I have done for more than 10 years. I’ve either been out of compliance for a decade or Amazon exercised the option to “terminate your account at any time, with or without cause.”

As it works out, we have a family wedding this weekend that will be taking our time. I will be posting daily (even if it is just a meme). I will be writing longer posts next week. And I’m sleeping an extra hour this morning. 🙂

In the meantime, read on!

Sad news from Amazon 26 comments

All –

Today I received this notice this morning from Amazon:

Effective today, Amazon is terminating your Associates account as well as the Operating Agreement that governs it.

We previously contacted you to request information regarding your Associates account. We received your response; however, it did not fully address our concerns. Therefore, as of today’s date, Amazon is terminating your Associates account as well as the Operating Agreement that governs it. Under the terms of the Operating Agreement, we may terminate your account at any time, with or without cause. This decision is final.

You must stop using the Content and Amazon Marks and promptly remove all links to the Amazon site. Because you are not in compliance with the Operating Agreement, Amazon will not pay you any outstanding commission income. Please be aware that any other related accounts may be closed without payment of any commissions.

I have complied with Amazon’s demands and have removed my posts. I will greatly miss all of you but as you can see there is no way to address Amazon’s decision. Sadly, Amazon has driven many people out of the business. I will seek alternative sites for you to visit and will post those soon.

I will be making posts on here for several weeks as I have paid for my web service through June.
