Thank you for your patience as we endured a server failure that took our site down for about 15 hours. Our IT support worked tirelessly to get us back on-line The solution was to rebuild the website from a backup saved Tuesday evening. We are working to restore posts and will have Housekeeping up as soon as we rebuild it.
Please spread the word that our site is back as we value every person who comes by the site to look for great buys on Kindle books.

Housekeeping: Summer Schedule; On-line Short Story and Words, words, words 6 comments

broom.panSummer Schedule
Finally we are enjoying summer weather and outdoor activities and Daily Cheap Reads is going to a summer schedule.
We will post the Daily Deals and 5-6 additional posts around 6:30am Central US time. The jr. edition will feature 1-2 posts each day in addition to the daily deal.
I’m frustrated by a couple of technical issues right now – Windows 8 updates that make my laptop useless and Amazon changing their images so that I can no longer access book covers to make posts. I am hopeful that I can find solutions quickly. If not, then I have to make tough decisions about the viability of the site.

Short Story On-Line Read
Have just a few minutes? “Mercy at Gettysburg,” by John Jakes is available to read on-line. A lost son, a vengeful father, and a rebel soldier are caught up in the saga of North vs. South. Read the story in just a couple of minutes here.

Words, Words, Words
Just a few phrases I’ve read in the last few weeks:
He was starch raving mad. Hmmmm – Light, medium or heavy starch raving mad?
Her voice went up an active. If you don’t know the word. . . . get active and look it up!
Eight years ago she left town riding on a greyhound. Here’s an image: a woman riding the racing dog sidesaddle.

Memorial Day 2015 3 comments

MemDay153Memorial Day weekend 2015 will be forever etched in our minds.
As many of you know, our younger brother John, age 45, suffered a fatal heart attack on Wednesday. Friday evening during the visitation at the church more than 200, perhaps 300 people – family, friends, co-workers, customers, employers, church family – came to give us hugs, recall John stories, and offer support.
Saturday we honored John’s life in the service and burial. John was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard for 27 years. Perhaps 30 men and their spouses from his unit (129th Field Artillery) were present in dress uniform. They draped the coffin with the American flag and stood in formation as the family exited the church.
At the cemetery they stood in formation throughout the graveside services. The American Legion Post presented the flags, three-gun salute and playing of taps. Two young men folded the American flag with precision and honor before presenting it to John’s widow.
As touching as all of this was, what tugged at our heartstrings was this: the tear-filled eyes of these citizen soldiers as they stood at attention to say good-bye to their comrade. Thank you, 129th Field Artillery, for your service to our family. And thank you for being the strong men who loved our brother.
Let us honor and remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Thank you for all your prayers and words of encouragement 2 comments

All –

We are greatly humbled with the outpouring of prayers, words of sympathy and encouragement extended to us at the death of our 45-year-old brother. Yesterday (Thursday) we assisted our sister-in-law in planning the service to celebrate John’s life.
As is the custom in our area of the United States, this evening the family will welcome friends and relatives to visit at the church for several hours where we will share our remembrances. Saturday morning we will celebrate John’s life at a church service. The next two days will be difficult and your continued prayers are appreciated.

–Paula and Susan
